So why record our expenses?
We wrestled with the idea of spending all our money on experiences versus knuckling down at work in an attempt to set ourselves up for the future. Ultimately, we decided that houses can burn down, investments can be lost and money can be wasted but memories can never be taken from you. We wanted to solidify those memories by creating videos. But also wanted to show people a realistic view of what a full-time travel lifestyle would cost. When I went looking for something similar they were few and far between, so I wanted to do something for the next person who comes looking. And so, a terrible and laborious google sheet was born. It's since been updated many times and is much easier to manage. All of the data here is from that sheet.
Where did the money come from? When we tell people that we are travelling full-time, they tend to have the same few comments. We must have wealthy parents who are paying for everything, or that we have come into inheritance or a lottery win or something else crazy. While we both acknowledge we are very privileged to be able to even earn an income - all the money we have saved up has been solely from working full time.
I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed putting it together!
What you came here for:
Breakdown of what's below:
Expense Report
Expense by category
Catagory | Expense |
Accomodation | $360 |
Food and Drink | $652 |
Transport | $410.35 |
Tours booked & Entry fees | $0 |
Miscellaneous | $1609 |
TOTAL | $3035 |
This is a quick reference category breakdown of our expenses.
We spent half of february at home and still went over budget. First reason for this is catching up with friends in Australia isnt cheap. we were spending our daily budget on one meal out with dinner and drinks. We also invested in ourselves by fixing old tech and buying some new tech!
Accommodations Expenses
Location | Accomodation | Nights | Notes | Cost |
Labuan Bajo (Bajo Sunset Hostel) | Private Room | 2 | Dodgy looking rooms but comfy beds | $44 |
Labuan Bajo (Pirate Island) | Private Room | 2 | Small hut on the beach, Shared bathroom | $120 |
Labuan Bajo (Pirate Island) | Private Room | 2 | Private bathroom and bigger room! | $200 |
Home | | 22 | | $0 |
TOTAL | | | | |
We spent most of February at home being trying to get ourselves ready for the coming year! unfortunately we ended up spending WAY more than we should have, particularly when you consider we are starting the next leg of our journey in a VERY expensive country. (Seriously, I can't find any sort of accommodation under our $100 budget per night)
Transport Expenses
Route | Mode | Notes | Cost |
Maumere - Labuan Bajo | Flight | Lion Air | $195 |
Labuan Bajo - Bali | Flight | | $180.35 |
Bali - Adelaide | Flight | cost Included in Jan | $0 |
TOTAL | | | |
Things to note: The numbers are different to the 'Expenses by Category' Section. that's because in that section I use the Master sheet which includes small transports like Ubers, Grabs, Taxis and short cheap trains which I thought wouldn't add any value in this section! (I kept the total the same) Small planes in Indonesia are not a fun time. fir the first time ever we had a flight cancel on us and it happened 3 times on this short trip! meaning we are still eaiting for refunds from airlines that we arent even sure are coming. (Not included above) The flights are relatively cheap and can be taken pretty last minute, the only caveat to that is the cost of baggage. They are all low cost airlines so any checked luggage can cost as much as another ticket!
Fixed Costs
Details | Notes | Cost |
Insurance | SafetyWing | $123.50 |
Adobe Premier Pro | | $29.00 |
Epidemic Sound | All our music! | $22 |
TOTAL | | $174.50 |
Insurance is expensive but worth it. Safety wing is our insurer of choice, they seemed to offer the most comprehensive cover especially when lots of countries needed specific types of insurance during the pandemic, they were great! Adobe is the software we used to edit our YouTube videos Epidemic sound is where we get all our music from, you can get a free trial with this link*: https://share.epidemicsound.com/i1nhpc

Amazon - 56 clicks this month - but it didn't relate in any sales. getting pretty disheartening.
Get your Guide - Only 10 people clicked on our link in February and still no purchases other than our initial success
Viator - Viator picked up a bit! we ended up having 3 people book tours through February all spanning form our vietnam videos. we have a money sitting in our partnership with Viator and are just waiting on tax forms to be able to recieve the funds! (Hopefully next month)
Licensing Agreements
No licensing this month, I'm hoping it wasn't a one time thing!
YouTube Analytics
It seems as if the dreaded January month caught up with us in february. We had a stinker. None of our videos really took off at all and still havent found any traction. Financially it was our worst performing month since August which is kind of greta to say! even though we had no videos perform great, we had enough of a back-catalogue to maintain a few views through the month.
We also published our one year wrap up which took Emily a long time to edit and we were really proud of, unfortauntely we struggled to get appropriate key words in there and it also hasn't found much of an audience.

Summary
Back to reality. Starting travelling, filming and editing again was harder than we though and it took a while to get back into it. Expenses: -$3035 Income: +$452.14 Change -$2583
Thank you so much if you have read this far! and of course, for watching along!
